How they see us: 8 ridiculous Gen-Y images from the net

Public perception of Generation Y, while diverse and often contradictory, is sometimes just downright absurd.  As my frequent web-browsing has revealed, there seems to be a good amount of older folks who are just tickled  by depicting us in some of the most outrageous ways imaginable.

Just for fun, I decided to run a Google image search for the phrases “Generation Y” and “Millennials” to see what would turn up.  Here are 8 of the most ridiculous findings…

Digital cameras are a must-have accessory when watching the tube.

Everyone who's anyone knows most Gen-Yers are goths. And most of them also wear their goth attire to the workplace.

How dare they not give me a reserved parking spot! Don't they know I have a bachelor's degree for God's sake?

It's true, Gen X never produced any horrible musicians. Vanilla Ice was an artistic legend.

Is that guy wearing a Playstation controller on his shoulder?

No, I wouldn't.

Anyone who wants their company to survive beyond the next decade, which is just about everyone.

I'm pretty sure this one was made as a joke, but still.

I love that the first image has that girl’s hair in her face to look like Cousin It. This is truly the style for ALL generation y members. Along with the goth lipstick…don’t leave home without that! Nice.

    I like this one: http://www.businessfacilities.com/blog/uploaded_images/rtpicdu1-795300.jpg

(it’s better than wearing a keyboard for a necklace.)

Those of us in generation x went through the same thing! Especially during the Reality Bites era … we were lazy, self-involved. The list went on and on. Truth is, we turned out just fine (and I’m loving seeing us grown up and taking care of business … tattoos and all!) :-) Gen Y will turn out just as well, if not better, I’m sure.

I prefer to think that any and all backlash against Generation Y is grounded in fear and angst, because as a whole, we are just that amazing.

In all seriousness though, have you ever read Douglas Coupland’s ‘Generation X’? His novel helped that label enter mainstream acceptance, and from what I have read, is not far off the mark. For all of X’s problems, however, the American labor market has yet to self-destruct, and I predict that Generation Y will follow a similar path, and not bear full responsibility for tumultuous times ahead.

I’m not going to say that Gen-Y is the most forward thinking generation EVER, or that we are best equipped to deal with the future, or that we have it all figured out - we’re facing negative feedback for those very attitudes. With some time to grow and mature, however, we’ll be just fine.
